Yes, You Can Burn This Without Setting Off the Smoke Alarm
This is probably the question we get asked the most: “Will it set off my smoke alarm?” The honest answer is no, but the longer answer — how we actually keep the smoke that low — is more interesting.
How we keep the smoke low
To be honest, controlling smoke is one of the hardest parts of making incense. Traditional sticks can get really smoky — they sting your eyes and leave the whole room smelling heavy. When we learned the craft in a small workshop in China, we were already trying to figure out how to make incense cleaner and more everyday-friendly.
Here's what we actually do. No fancy secrets, just the things we've tested and refined ourselves.
It starts with the ingredients
We only use natural wood powders and resins as the base — sandalwood, aloeswood, cedar, frankincense, and the like. These burn much cleaner than cheap fillers or synthetic fragrance oils. We're careful with the ratios: too much resin and a stick smokes more, so we keep it balanced.
We grind everything very fine
Probably the most important step. We mill our powders to at least 80–100 mesh. The finer the powder, the more evenly it burns. Coarse bits are the main reason for black smoke — they don't burn completely.
The right binder, just enough
We use a small amount of natural plant-based binder, 15–25% maximum. Too much and it smokes; too little and the stick falls apart. Sometimes we add a tiny bit of natural charcoal or a specific wood powder to help the burn stay steady — but always minimal. That's the trick.
Shaping and drying — patience is everything
After we hand-roll or extrude each stick, we dry them slowly in controlled conditions. It can take several days. Rushing the drying — with heat or fans — creates uneven moisture inside the stick, which causes popping or extra smoke. Slow and steady is the only way we do it.
We test every batch
Before anything ships, we light a sample from each new mix. We watch how much smoke it makes, how clean the burn is, whether any residue is left. A good low-smoke stick should give off just a thin, light wisp of smoke and let the scent unfold gently.
What this means in your apartment
In a normal room with a bit of airflow, our sticks produce very little visible smoke. After they burn, the scent fades cleanly without that heavy after-smell. That's exactly why we designed them for daily use — bedside table, desk, living room, wherever you need a quiet moment.
Why this matters to us. Keeping smoke low isn't just a technical thing — it's a promise. When we first moved to North America, we hated how strong smells could take over a house. We wanted our incense to feel safe and welcoming, something you can light every day without worrying about your air or your lungs.
Through Shyang and this site, we want to share that same calm with you. Whether you're in Vancouver, Toronto, New York, or anywhere else, we hope lighting one of our sticks gives you a small, honest pause — the way it does for us, every day.
If you ever have questions about burning our incense, or anything else, just email or message us. We read every note.
